Privacy policy

The short version

NORTH has no sign-in, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. The only thing we ever store on a server is what you put on the scoreboard: a name you choose and your daily scores — and only if you join it.

What stays on your device

Your streak, play statistics, settings and today's result are stored in your browser's (or the app's) local storage, on your device only. They never leave it. Clearing the app's data — or using Reset local data in Settings — removes them permanently.

Map tiles

The map itself is loaded from OpenFreeMap, a free, open-source tile host. Like any web request, your IP address is visible to that service when tiles load. OpenFreeMap states that it does not log or track users. Nothing else is fetched from a third party: the map engine and the fonts ship inside the app.

The scoreboard

Joining the scoreboard is optional. If you join, we store the display name you type, a random identifier created on your device, your daily scores, and a country for the country rankings — guessed from your device's timezone setting, shown to you before you join, and changeable to anything or nothing. No email, no password, nothing else. The name you choose is public — pick accordingly. Submissions are rate-limited by IP address to keep the board honest; addresses are only used for that count. Use Reset local data in Settings to detach this device from its scoreboard identity.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily reminder, notifications are scheduled on your device by your device. There is no push server, we send nothing, and no token or identifier leaves your phone. Turn it off in Settings, or in iOS Settings, at any time.

Sharing your result

Share result creates a summary image of your scores on your device and hands it to your device's own share sheet. Nothing is uploaded by us; where it goes is entirely your choice.

Children

NORTH is not directed at children and asks for no personal information from anyone. The only data any user can provide is an optional scoreboard name, which should not be a real name.

Changes

If this policy ever changes materially, the date above will change with it.
